About Us
The Ethnic Communities Festival is being held on Sunday 18th May 2025 from 4pm to 8pm.
At the Mount Roskill War Memorial Hall, 15 May Road, PuketÄpapa, Mt Roskill, Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand.
We hope you can join us, and also share this with your family, friends, colleagues and whÄnau.
There will be Food Stalls, Fire Dance, Cultural Dances, Music and a Cultural Fashion Show.
And as part of this, we also want to further engage and discuss and get input and feedback on our community emergency management needs, and our shared-vision for long-term recovery from floods and disasters. Our area, PuketÄpapa (Mt Roskill) was the most severely affected area in Auckland during the 2023 floods.
This is also part of an initiative to build an inclusive and progressive Ethnic Communities Collective, with a focus on like-minded grassroots leaders and organisations, who want to support social justice and a build a better nation and world for all of us.
We also acknowledge the United Nations UNESCO World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (21 May 2025).
The organisers are a group of volunteers who are passionate about our Communities, and want to bring people together to celebrate our cultures and diversity.
Can you please support us with the following :
- Promote the Festival by sharing this with your family, friends, colleagues and whÄnau.
And here are some comments from the United Nations (https://www.un.org/en/observances/cultural-diversity-day) :
- The essential role of inter-cultural dialogue is for achieving peace and sustainable development
- The pandemic has proven the intrinsic value of the cultural and creative sector at generating social cohesion, educational resource or personal well-being in times of crisis
- The cultural sector accounts for 3.1% of global GDP and 6.2% of all existing employment
- Three-quarters of the worldâs major conflicts have a cultural dimension
- Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development
- Cultural diversity is a driving force of development, not only with respect to economic growth, but also as a means of leading a more fulfilling intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual life
- Cultural diversity is thus an asset that is indispensable for poverty reduction and the achievement of sustainable development
- Innovative use of media and Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs), are conducive to dialogue among civilisations and cultures, for respect and mutual understanding.
The day provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the values of cultural diversity and to advance the four goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions adopted on 20 October 2005 :
- Support sustainable systems of governance for culture
- Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services
- Increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals
- Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks
- Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms
